Det'on Cho Scholarship Awards

Candice Crookedhand was born in Yellowknife and raised in Hay River. She is a member of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation. Candice is completing her second year in Aurora College's Business Administration Program. She plans to pursue a career in Business Management and become a local entrepreneur.

Alice Jensen 

Alice Jensen is a member of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation from Hay River, currently residing on the Katlodeeche First Nation. Alice is completing her third year at the University of British Columbia, majoring in Indigenous studies. 

“I’ve learned a lot in the years I’ve been at school. I am thinking of pursuing a master's degree, If not a career in Indigenous government or working with Indigenous governments.”

Cayley Godard-Sabourin

Cayley Godard-Sabourin was raised in the community of N’dilo and is a member of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation. She is currently completing her first year in the Pre-Health & Science Pathway Certificate Program at Centennial College in Toronto. 

“With a deep commitment to fostering healing and resilience, my career aspiration is to become a health professional dedicated to supporting individuals affected by trauma, particularly within Indigenous communities.”

Awry Beaulieu is from N’dilo and is studying Indigenous Environmental Science with Dechinta Nawao and Trent University. 

“I aim to complete this program and continue with another 2 years to recieve my bachelors degree in in Environmental sciences to become a environmental consultant for future mining projects and energy projects in the NWT”

Kyle Sangris

Kyle Sangris is completing his second year of Indigenous Environmental Studies & Science with Trent University and Dechita Naowo. 

“I plan to work within the communities in the environmental field and mentor our future generations.”

Deborah Drybones is from Yellowknife and enrolled in her second year of the Professional Counselling Diploma Program with Rhodes Wellness College. After school, she plans to pursue a career in which she can help her community.

Donovan Evans is a member of the Yellowknives Dene first Nation, from N’Dilo. Donovan is pursuing Information Technology studies at Grant MacEwan University and plans to further specialize in this field through advanced coursework at the U of A. 

“By becoming a proficient information technology expert, I hope to combine the best aspects of both worlds and close the gap between our little town and the more extensive technological developments found in cities.”

Kristielyn Jones is a Two-Spirited Dene woman from Fort Smith, currently residing in Yellowknife. She is currently enrolled in the Addictions & Community Health Professional Diploma Program with Sundance College. She plans to use her education to be of service to the communities in the Northwest Territories in this helping field.

“With this formal education, I will be able to provide detailed addictions treatment plans for clients, support them with pharmacology knowledge about harm-reduction treatment planning and to provide addiction treatment plans, while strengthening my group facilitation skills to offer outpatient treatment programs in the North.”

Denna Goulet 

Denna Goulet is from N’dilo and a member of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation who has completed the Adult Literacy and Basic Education program, the Occupational and College Access Program and is now enrolled in the Personal Support Worker program at Aurora College. 

“The emotional reward of helping others can be incredibly satisfying. So, my goal is to finish this school year and graduate with a Personal Support worker certificate.”
